Great job getting a Preview phone. Thats a big deal… I have only seen 1 other site with a preview phone so far. Phone looks great.. seems smooth… seems much nicer than MT3G.. it just bites that Sprint does not work at all in my house. my cellphone has to work in my house for Business purposes. thanks for the preview.

  5. Ja5on says:

@Quiksand: Thanks man! We are very excited about getting the Hero, and you’re right, not many other people have a review unit yet, so we feel VERY fortunate. The phone IS very smooth, it’s night and day really. As I said the software update made the Hero even better, and the extra memory goes a loooong way. I have so many apps running in the background, and I just let ‘em do their thing! Battery life seems great so far too as the Hero has the biggest battery of any Android phone yet.

The good thing is that with so many manufacturers and carriers jumping on board with Android, better performance is coming very soon.

I’m sorry Sprint isn’t an option for you, hopefully someone releases the original GSM Hero, or Verizon picks it up in a few months.

  6. Ja5on says:

@Chosen_one1: Unfortunately, the Sprint Hero won’t work on T-Mobile’s network because the two carriers use different technologies that are incompatible. T-Mobile uses GSM (as does AT&T), while Sprint uses CDMA (as does Verizon).

CDMA phones don’t have SIM cards, so unfortunately you can’t just take your SIM card out and pop it in a new phone.

We aren’t as lucky as our friends across the Pond in Europe where they are pretty much all GSM. A lot of users over there do PAYG (pay as you go) service w/ no contracts (not as much of a scam there as it is here), and as a result, they can swap in and out b/t carriers whenever they feel like it.

  7. Laze says:

Will the Everything Data Plan be required?

  8. Zach says:

Is there any other way to text like a on-screen t9 version?

  9. Ja5on says:

    @Laze: Yes. From the release:

“HTC Hero requires activation on a pricing plan offering unlimited data. Sprint’s Simply EverythingSM plan provides unlimited nationwide calling, texting, e-mail, social networking, Web browsing, GPS navigation, Sprint TV, streaming music, NFL Mobile Live, NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile and much more for only $99.99 per month. That’s a savings of $1,200 over two years vs. a comparable AT&T iPhone® plan2. Sprint Everything Data plans with unlimited messaging and data start at just $69.99 for 450 minutes with unlimited night and weekend calling starting at 7 p.m. (All price plans exclude Sprint surcharges and taxes.) “

  10. Ja5on says:

@Zach: Yup, I’ll show off the t9 in the full review!

  11. Ryan says:

the verizon dare can text with real t9 with the normal phone dialer layout, for some one that wants to text with one hand like a flip phone.. can the hero do that? u only showed us a Qwerty pad vertical and horizonal.. or is there a appt for that if it dont?

  12. Add says:

    Yes, you can.
