UPDATED w/ Video: Samsung Moment (formerly InstinctQ) QWERTY-slider for Sprint announced today

Well well well, look at what we have here.  The anti-full touchscreen heads out there are about to get a new weapon to choose from in the Android artillery closet.  We first heard about the mysterious Samsung InstinctQ awhile back, and while we knew it was headed to Sprint (the leaked photo has the Sprint logo clearly on it), other details were a bit scarce.  Today Samsung ended that mystery, and in conjunction with the CTIA Wireless conference going on, the company has made a new portfolio annoucement which includes the previously mentioned Behold II, and now the Moment.

Samsung Moment

More after the break!

Samsung Moment

The Samsung Moment integrates the open and innovative Android platform with Google complete with built-in Google mobile services, including Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube as well as the thousands of applications built on the Android platform. The Moment is the first Sprint device to include a brilliant 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen display and is designed with a tactile QWERTY keyboard that slides out horizontally and a virtual QWERTY keypad for versatile text messaging and email access. Device navigation is simple thanks to an optical joystick located just below the expansive display. Powered by an 800 Mhz processor, the Samsung Moment is one of the fastest available in the market and features WiFi capability, integrated GPS navigation, 3.2 megapixel camera and camcorder and stereo Bluetooth® technology.

I had previously speculated that the Behold II might use Samsung’s own 800Mhz processor – the same processor they developed and used in the Jet, and new Omnia lines – but it looks like the Moment is meant to be the workhorse of Sammy’s Android offerings, and will pack the new CPU.  Featuring the company’s amazing 3.2″ AMOLED display, Optical Trackpad (first for an Android device!), and all the other usual suspects, the Moment looks like it will be a big seller for the QWERTY-slider fans out there.   The upgraded CPU should be a big performance boost for Android, and hopefully Sammy followed suit with the internal memory.

Sprint’s commitment to Android is looking pretty solid, as it appears they will have both the HTC Hero (full touch screen), and Samsung Moment (QWERTY-slider) in their portfolio very soon, which is sure to appease any Android fan out there.  The picture above has been out for awhile so the Moment may look completely different now.  Samsung has a press event later today, so let’s hope for more details, launch info, and updated photos!

UPDATES:  According to the the Pre-Registration page, the Moment launches November 1st on Sprint for… $179.99 w/ 2-year contract, just like the Hero!  Sprint is really putting their Android devices at a great price point.  Also, apparently this phone will not feature the custom TouchWiz UI, and will have the “with Google” branding.

While this phone looks oh so sweet … this 3.2 mega pixel camera should be trashed and standard should be the 5.0. This is basically a G1 just a little better looking .. only thing that would let me not say that would be the specs

Must be with tmo. People want to say Hero is mytouch and now Moment is the g1. This phone blows g1 out the water. No comparison!!

  3. chosen_one1 says:

I am with tmobile and i would never compare that piece of crap mytouch with a Hero . NEVERRRRR.

This phone doesn't blow the G1 out the water …… well maybe the processor is better but i would have to see the spec sheet before i make that statement …

G1 is a sweet phone with all the rooted enhancements ….. you might be comparing it to a stock G1

my name is Judy, and I plan to exchange my Hero for the Moment as soon as Best Buy gets it in (I have already talked to them about doing that) precisely because the Moment does have the landscape slider. Don't you just love having choices? I want to stay with Sprint and Android, so I couldn't be happier that Sprint is committed to providing choices for everyone. I wish the media player in the phone would honor the sort order of the machine from which the music files were obtained. I wish the media player would honor folder separation of the mp3s instead of jacking up everything and listing ALL music files. Making playlists is a royal PITA when foreign language or corrupted language characters/unknow appear and make what should be a few minutes of work last an hour or two. I used to have a very cheap mp3 player that respected sticking music into folders. It should then be possible to add FOLDERS to playlists. For now, i have to either give up, or methodically and tediously relable ALL my music with long names such as "artist-album-trackno-trackname" to rectify the maddening sort-mangling. I know the Google devs are smarter than that, so what's up?

Overall, i LIKE my moment. But, there should be a quick pause and a forward/backward/replay/skip capability so that we can interrupt the music when assisting passersby or listening to transit announcements and don't want to remove our earbuds.

It should be possible to push my phone to 1.6 from 1.5. I understand that Droid has a lock on 2.0 (probably to give them a 2.0 leg up on other Android versions/hardware?), but it should be possible to backport some of that functionality.

It should be possible to see a widget for Desktops when trying to get back to the open browsers. Somehow, i keep managing to collapse/close my open browser windows when trying to get back into them. It's kind of unsettling.

Given that the Moment is a Korean hand phone (their local-only top-tier version of Moment must have ALL SORTS of nicer touches…), it is nice that THIS Samsung (unlike the Instinct, if i recall correct) has a lanyard attach point. I don't think the Motorola Cliq does, and that makes me feel mfrs are pushing consumers to cheap gel or high-end cases and shells. I prefer to put a loop through it and hang around my neck or secure to my belt but insert in my pocket, screen against my leg.

As for the MicroSD card, WHY, WHY must that be obstructed by the battery? Why not hot-swappable.

Why is there not Flash support so that CNET products and NPR audio files can be enjoyed? Sure, Android 2.0 is supposed to remedy this issue, but i'm stuck on what appears to be 1.5 if Firmware Version 1.5 and if BUild Number Cupcake CJ05 are any indication. I told my phone to check for system updates, but i get a message saying "No updates available" or something to that efffect.

Unlike the Motorola Cliq, the Samsung Moment has some "oompf" in the weight. I LIKE that. It confers a feeling of "not as cheap" as others. The sliders of both phones seem fine to me, tho i cannot see what some mag reviewers were griping about.

Thanks for a great outlook on the Moment. Most would agree that the stock Android Music app leaves a lot to be desired. I was hoping it would get updated in 2.0 but sadly it did not. They are probably waiting to roll out their music service and an updated Music app to go along with it. Have you looked at alternatives in the Market? TuneWiki is pretty good.

In terms of getting back to your open Browser window, holding down the HOME key will pop up a list of the 6 most recently-used apps.. so you can press Home to get back to your Home screen to another app say to copy something, and then hold Home and tap to go back to your browser where you left off, and paste. Hopefully that'll help ya out.

MicroSD card slots should NEVER be placed underneath the battery.. I hate that. Most people have more than one and it completely defeats the purpose of hot-swapping when you have to shut the phone down and pull the battery.

No phone really really has full flash support, but like you said it is coming for Android soon. As far as getting Android 2.0 on the Moment, hopefully the competition b/t devices will push all the manufacturers to keep their versions up to date as quickly as possible.

Overall, glad you are liking your Moment. Is this your first Android device?
