Linux creator Linus Torvalds calls the Nexus One “A winner”
As many of you know, none of us here at Leakdroid currently work on the site full-time (yet). We all have full-time jobs, and pretty demanding ones at that. So sometimes trying to bring you the most complete Android coverage possible is a tough task, but we do it because we love it. I am a Sr. Linux Systems Administrator full-time, so this one is near and dear to my heart, and I just had to post it.

The heralded creator of Linux, Linus Torvalds, just bought a Nexus One, and he loves it. Linus’ reasoning for wanting a phone that runs Linux echoes my own personal feelings, and is part of the reason why I love Android to begin with. Linux people are a different breed, and theĀ Open Source philosophy sort of carries over into our every day lives. In many ways for some of us, our choice to use or work with Linux is a direct reflection of our own personalities. We don’t like being told that we can’t do something, or that we have to do things a certain way. We like flexibility, customization, and change. And those are three things that Android is very good at. Have a look at just some of what Linus had to say:
But I have to admit, the Nexus One is a winner. I wasn’t enthusiastic about buying a phone on the internet sight unseen, but the day it was reported that it finally had the pinch-to-zoom thing enabled, I decided to take the plunge. I’ve wanted to have a GPS unit for my car anyway, and I thought that google navigation might finally make a phone useful.
And it does. What a difference! I no longer feel like I’m dragging a phone with me “just in case” I would need to get in touch with somebody – now I’m having a useful (and admittedly pretty good-looking) gadget instead. The fact that you can use it as a phone too is kind of secondary.
Even though Android isn’t “pure” Linux it’s still Linux at its core, and I guess we Linux folks just love us some Linux everywhere we can get it to run. Linus, a previous G1 owner, had reservations about purchasing a device over the Internet sight unseen, and I think many users out there feel the same way. But he took the plunge, and and thinks Google knocked it out of the park with the N1. And coming from the creator of Linux himself, I think the statement speaks for itself.
